Send-off shout-out

Dear family and friends, how wonderful that you’re all here! Yesterday, Johan asked, “Are we actually going to give a speech?” “Well, let’s have something ready just in case,” I replied, followed by a silence that Johan broke with: “As long as you don’t start crying!”

This Friday, directly after Christmas, we’re leaving for Spain. How did we get here? You’ll be able to read all about it, as I’ll be writing a blog about how we’re building our new life under the Andalusian sun. We weren’t selected for the Dutch equivalent of BBC´s A New Life in the Sun because the broadcasting channel didn’t find us exciting enough. But of course, we’d love for you to follow along on our journey.

Recently, we had dinner with friends who live near our renovated donkey stable in Spain. Our Norwegian vecina suggested reading tarot cards. Johan drew a card symbolizing what we love to do most: taking new steps, creating something out of nothing, turning ideas into results, enjoying a creative process, and making connections and friendships.

I drew a card that symbolized childhood memories, reminding me not only to dream about the future but also to pause and reflect on the past and cherish my relationships—especially, of course, with my mother, our dear sisters, and family. Suddenly, our farewell felt very real.

We are saying goodbye to our home, our jobs, and some material possessions, but those things aren’t what matter most to us. What truly matters are the bonds and the connections. Despite the physical distance, in Spain, we’re only a phone call, message, or email away. And dear friends, you are always welcome at our home in Spain! Seeing each other there will be just as special and enjoyable as it is here.

I’ll wrap things up now. Thank you for coming to our farewell gathering. But—we’re not going home just yet! The sharp listener may have noticed that not a single Spanish word has been spoken in this speech. But here’s one to end with: SALUD!
